The ordering gap in Ogden
By Taylor Remund, founder of Plateful ·
Ogden's food scene runs on history — a downtown built around Historic 25th Street, where a century-old storefront is as likely to hold a taqueria as a gastropub. What it doesn't run on, for most of its independents, is any ordering channel they own.
In my verified catalogue of the Wasatch Front's independents, Ogden counts 74. 44 of them — 59% — have no direct online-ordering channel: their online orders, where they exist at all, happen through marketplace listings at 15–30% commission or on DoorDash-hosted Storefront pages (12 of the 44). That's above the corridor's 56%.
Two distinctions make Ogden's gap unusual. It has 14 independents with no website at all — the most of any city on the Front; for nearly one in three of its no-channel restaurants, a hungry phone finds no menu, no hours, no page. And it holds one of the corridor's six verified zero-online restaurants — kitchens with no way to take an online order anywhere, confirmed by hand.
Established, reviewed, invisible
Ogden's version of the gap follows the corridor pattern: these are proven kitchens, not marginal ones. Forty of the 44 have more than a hundred Google reviews; the group averages about 960 reviews at 4.4 stars. The cuisine mix skews exactly the way the corridor data does — Ogden's independents are led by 16 Mexican restaurants, with Chinese and Thai close behind, the family-run kitchens least likely to have spare evenings for web software.
The 30 who've solved it
On the other side, 30 Ogden independents run their own ordering, and the vendor mix mirrors the corridor landscape in miniature: Toast leads with 10, then Square, SpotOn, and Olo with 3 each. Ordering tech clearly works in Ogden — for the restaurants whose volume justifies a monthly software bill. The 44 without are disproportionately the budget spots the subscription model screens out.
What it costs
Take a modest Ogden restaurant doing $3,000 a month through delivery apps at 25%: that's $750 a month, $9,000 a year — most of it on regulars who already chose the place. Across 44 restaurants, even conservative assumptions put Ogden's annual commission bill in the hundreds of thousands.
If yours is one of the 44: run your numbers in the savings calculator, or grab 15 minutes with me — I build the storefront and menu for you, and 4% capped is the whole price.
